I thought that if i let anyone in, they’d find out what was broken about me. And then not only would they know, i’d know too.

Barbenheimer

Yes, I’m on line way more than I should be, but it’s fun and in case you’ve lived under a rock, the summer of Barbenheimer is upon us. It’s actually quite sweet. How these two movies that are coming out on the same day encourage each other rather than bring each other down.

Cause “after the pandemic,” i feel like there’s revenge everything. And being back in the cinemas (yes, for Mission Impossible: Dead Recknoning too — which sidebar, WAS FREAKING AMAZING, I am a Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt 5ever. That was a wild ride and I will always watch those movies as comfort ones), is a really different experience.

And so with the internet on my side, I decide to go Oppenheimer first with Taylor because he likes biopics about scientists (why wouldn’t he?) and Barbie with my sister. And honestly, I did enjoy them both but it feels like sacrilege to say I enjoyed Oppenheimer a little more?

This is not a knock on Barbie at all. Barbie was perfect. It knew what it was supposed to do and it brought it. I will still marvel at how it’s breaking every possible record in cinema history and I am here for it. Margot Robbie was amazing. Greta has done it again. And Ryan Gosling is perfection. The monologues were needed but clunky, but I’ll take it. It also doesn’t hurt that we got Gold Class tickets and we felt like plebes in the dinner service that we’d get with the movie.

Leni’s campaign in 2023 helped prepare me in a way because it was the community of people flocking to the cinemas in full pink regalia that made the experience even more memorable. 95% of the cinema was in pink and those that weren’t probably felt like they should have. And it was Mattel perfection. I, too had a barbie growing up and this existential dread she must feel, felt quite natural.

But taking a step back and thinking back to Oppenheimer, I was pretty damn engrossed in it considering it was a 3 hour biopic with lots of talking. Chris Nolan knows how to do things and he does them so well. The practical blow-ups because why wouldn’t you do practical effects, was amazing.

Cillian Murphy’s eyes literally bore through my sole and it was a great portrayal and the multiple timelines somehow worked even if I was skeptical. The fun part after was seeing who all these characters were in real life and mapping them back to the actors and seeing how everyone in the movie seemed to have won an Nobel prize, because why not.

Nevertheless, it was a great experience at the movies and I’m glad we get to go back again.
