World Cup 2022
And just like that, we’re done with this World Cup. Though none of my bets quite made it to the quarter finals, I’m glad it was Argentina in the end.
There were a lot of Tottenham players and down to the end, Romero beat out club captain Lloris, so it was an added bonus to see the team so well represented.
Lows
Qatar in general and all the labour shithousery going on and political upheaval. The podcast World corrupt, kept me company and well informed on how terrible it was as a choice
Grant Wahl passing away. I didn’t quite follow his sports writing but all the internet discourse about him points to the fact he was well loved and it’s sad news.
My bets Belgium and Denmark fizzled out quickly. Like really fast and it’s sad that my faves didn’t make it far.
The time zones were quite bad. Earlier in the series there were 6 and 9pm matches. But the 3am ones were just horrible.
Highs:
Japan and South Korea making it quite far. And then Saudi Arabia, Morocco going almost all the way. I love how Asia and Africa were represented
All the European upsets with Germany and Spain and Portugal by teams that you wouldn’t think would make it.
Argentina versus France really was an amazing ending. My brother and I were on the edge of our seats and definitely rooting for Messi but France went all out. So I’m glad we got a good game in the end.
It’ll be another four years till the next one in the Americas. And we’ll see how that goes but despite the drama surrounding this one, the beautiful game proved quite pretty.
